June Fantasy Escape

It’s time for another readathon!! I have been wanting to do a fantasy readathon for a year. Last June I did a beach reads one so I’m sorry to all the beach read fans, but this year we are reading fantasy!!! There will be prizes and buddy reads as usual, and a bingo board full of suggestions to help you plan your reads! I’m so excited this time to also have a co-host! Milana from @acouplereads will be joining me!

Two of the prompts on the bingo board can be covered with one book. For example, if you are reading a low fantasy book by a BIPOC author, you can check both of those squares. I will go over some of the more specific prompts below.

First of all low fantasy and high fantasy. I did a whole blog post about the difference, including examples, which you can read here. But basically a low fantasy is set in our world and has magic added in. A high fantasy is a completely different world. Lord of the Rings is a good example.

The prompt for a book written by an LGBQTIA+ author can also be covered by a book with LGBQTIA+ characters.

A mythological fantasy is a book that includes Greek or Roman mythology, or Incan mythology, or Russian Folklore, something like that. There are mythological creatures and beings, usually woven into the fabric of our own world. Some examples are:

  1. Circe or The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
  2. The Bear and the Nightingale series by Katherine Arden
  3. Lore by Alexanra Bracken
  4. A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair
  5. All the Percy Jackson books
  6. American Gods by Neil Gaiman
  7. Most of Rick Riordan’s books
  8. The War Gods series by Graham Hancock
  9. Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

Milana and I are hosting a few buddy reads for the readathon as well, so if you would like to join in let one of us know. I won’t be hosting buddy reads for every book I read this month because a bunch of them are the second books in series.

Buddy reads:

  1. A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair
  2. Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
  3. City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
  4. The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
  5. Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

These are all the books I will be reading for the different prompts:

  1. A low fantasy – City of Brass by SA Chakraborty
  2. A high fantasy – The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart
  3. A fantasy by an LGBQTIA+ author – King of the Rising by Kacen Callendar
  4. A fantasy by a BIPOC author – Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
  5. A mythological fantasy – A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair
  6. A fantasy by a new to you author – An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
  7. A fantasy by a favourite author – Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan

Here are a few extras I have in mind if I have time:

  1. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
  2. Lore by Alexandra Bracken
  3. A Vow so Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer

I’m so excited for this readathon. Get your library holds in, get your books ordered and get ready to spend the month of June in another world!

Happy Reading!

Angie
